Whenever I saw men and women from the Maghreb in Medina and Mecca, I saw something of Europe in their faces, reading in them Europes long journey through Andalusian Spain into northern Africa.
At the time of the hajj you will see in Medina and Mecca how thin and frail, how barely noticeable is the European strain in that ocean of pilgrims - so few are Europeans that it is as if there are none. If the Indo-European Muslim river were not there to swell the European rivulet, one would not see it at all: it would be as if a dozen bees had gone missing from the swarm.
